Engine coolant is often overlooked, but it plays a vital role in keeping your engine at the right temperature and preventing costly corrosion damage — especially in Singapore's heat.
Coolant (antifreeze) regulates engine temperature, preventing overheating that can warp cylinder heads, blow head gaskets, or seize the engine entirely. In Singapore's tropical climate, where temperatures regularly exceed 32°C, an efficient cooling system is absolutely critical.
Over time, coolant degrades and becomes acidic. Acidic coolant corrodes aluminium components, rubber hoses, the water pump, and the radiator from the inside. Regular coolant flushes remove this acidic, contaminated fluid before it causes permanent damage.
A failed water pump, cracked radiator, or blown head gasket caused by coolant neglect can cost S$500 to S$3,000+ to repair. A coolant flush typically costs a fraction of that. It is one of the highest ROI maintenance tasks you can perform.
Temperature gauge reading higher than normal, sweet smell from the engine bay, white steam from the bonnet, milky residue on the oil dipstick (coolant mixing with oil), or visible rust/discolouration in the coolant reservoir — all require immediate attention.
Every 2 years or 40,000 km, whichever comes first. Some long-life coolants can last longer, but always check the condition — discoloured or rusty coolant should be flushed immediately regardless of mileage.
Topping up is a temporary fix. Over time, the coolant's inhibitors deplete and it turns acidic. Only a full flush removes contaminated fluid and refills with fresh, properly mixed coolant.
Different manufacturers specify different coolant types (OAT, HOAT, IAT). Using the wrong type can cause chemical reactions that accelerate corrosion. Our technicians will identify the correct coolant specification for your vehicle.
